Is There Hope For Me or My Loved Ones to Be Forgiven?

One of the greatest challenges that face members of the Church is overcoming feelings of spiritual inadequacy. This is understandable when we compare ourselves with the Savior. However spiritual growth to become like Christ is a lifelong endeavor that will continue beyond the grave. The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that “It is not all to be comprehended in this world; it will be a great work to learn our salvation and exaltation even beyond the grave.”[1] This does not justify the procrastinator. It does give hope and perspective to the long process of becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ. The Lord does not expect us to reach perfection in this life because complete perfection is reserved for resurrected being.[2] The process of becoming a follower of Jesus requires learning how to love as Jesus loved. This doesn’t happen overnight. Developing the pure love of Christ, which is charity, includes patience, longsuffering, and character traits such as mercy. These are learned traits which are often developed only through heartache and sorrow and learning from our mistakes and poor choices. After one has exercised sufficient faith and repentance to be baptized, it is a lifelong up and down experience to learn to live with the companionship of the Holy Ghost and endure to the end of one’s mortal life basically worthy of a temple recommend or on the pathway thereto. For most of us repentance is a repetitive event that we celebrate from one sacrament meeting to another. Many fall out of activity for extended periods of time, even years only to come to themselves as a prodigal son or daughter. Some will learn what they need to learn in the Spirit World.[3] They will still come forward after learning obedience by the things that they suffer.[4] They will yet be reunited with their loved ones in the Kingdom of God.

The Prophet Joseph also taught that the Lord, “was acquainted with the situation of all nations and their destiny; He ordered all things according to the counsel of His own will; He knows the situation of both the living and the dead, and has made ample provision for their redemption, according to their several circumstances, and the laws of the kingdom of God, whether in this world, or in the world to come.”[5] Brigham Young gave the following message of hope to the parents of wayward loved ones. “Jesus will bring forth, by his own redemption, every son and daughter of Adam, except the sons of perdition, who will be cast into hell. Others will suffer the wrath of God—will suffer all the Lord can demand at their hands, or justice can require of them; and when they have suffered the wrath of God till the utmost farthing is paid, they will be brought out of prison. Is this a dangerous doctrine to preach? Some consider it dangerous; but it is true that every person who does not sin away the day of grace, and become an angel of the Devil, will be brought forth to inherit a kingdom of glory.”[6] This same conclusion is reported in D&C 76:38-44 that the only ones not redeemed in the due time of the Lord are the sons of perdition.

It is important to remember that every person who was born on this earth and within the four corners thereof, and received a mortal body did so because they were valiant in the war in heaven. Joseph Fielding Smith said in 1954 that there were no “neutrals in the war in heaven.”[7] This means that all those who receive earthly tabernacles, born of woman on this earth, supported Jehovah, even Jesus Christ in the premortal Grand Council in heaven. They rejected Lucifer and loved and voted for Jesus to be the Messiah and their personal Savior. All except those who become sons of perdition will reject Lucifer again either on earth or in the Spirit World and gratefully accept Jesus Christ as their Savior as they did in the premortal existence. The “good news,” the “glad tidings,” the Gospel of Jesus Christ is that Jesus came into the world, “to be crucified for the [whole] world, and to bear the sins of the [whole] world, and to sanctify the [whole] world and to cleanse it from all unrighteousness; that through him all might be saved…except sons of perdition.”[8]

Former murders, even those like King David who committed first degree murder will find forgiveness in Spirit Prison Hell.[9] We do not yet comprehend the depth, breathe, and magnitude of an Atonement that can cleanse even an Adolph Hitler or Joseph Stalin. The scriptures are clear in saying all will be redeemed except sons of perdition and the scriptures are equally forthright in declaring that no unclean thing can enter any of the kingdoms or mansions of our Father in heaven, meaning the Telestial, Terrestrial, or Celestial kingdoms.[10] There is a place prepared for the cleansing of mass murderers and rapist and the unrepentant who die in their sins. “And a hell I have prepared for them, if they repent not.”[11] The suffering they will have to go through is equal to some of the suffering that Jesus experienced in the Garden of Gethsemane, “How sore you know not, how exquisite you know not, yea, how hard to bear you know not, for behold, I God, have suffered these things for all, that they might not suffer if they would repent; but if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; which suffering caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and to suffer both body and spirit.”[12]

Who can qualify to become a son of perdition was answered as follows in the Encyclopedia of Mormonism, “Those in mortal life who “deny the Holy Ghost,” which is generally interpreted as rejecting and denying Christ after receiving a personal witness and a “perfect knowledge” of Jesus. Joseph Smith taught: All sins shall be forgiven, except the sin against the Holy Ghost; for Jesus will save all except the sons of perdition. What must a man do to commit the unpardonable sin? He must receive the Holy Ghost, have the heavens opened unto him, and know God, and then sin against him. After a man has sinned against the Holy Ghost, there is no repentance for him. He has got to say that the sun does not shine while he sees it; he has got to deny Jesus Christ when the heavens have been opened unto him, and to deny the plan of salvation with his eyes open to the truth of it.”[13]

Rare are the examples of sons of perdition in the scriptures and relatively few were involved in the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith. It is doubtful that any of our loved ones would qualify to become a son of perdition. The stipulation of actually hearing or seeing the resurrected Christ is a high standard few could meet. Additionally to then deny the truth of the plan of salvation after the Holy Ghost has given a person a perfect knowledge of its veracity requires a level of animus and hatred toward the Atonement of Christ possessed by an extremely fanatical minority of former disciples of Jesus.

The Prophet Joseph gave us this insight about the conditions of being a son of perdition. “What has Jesus said? All sin, and all blasphemies, and every transgression, except one that man can be guilty of, may be forgiven; and there is a salvation for all men, either in this world or the world to come, who have not committed the unpardonable sin.[14]

Addressing the issue of those who are born in the covenant or enter the covenant, the Apostle Orson F. Whitney declared that, “Our Heavenly Father is far more merciful, infinitely more charitable than even the best of his servants, and the Everlasting Gospel is mightier in power to save than our narrow finite minds can comprehend…Though some of the sheep may wander, the eye of the shepherd is upon them, and sooner or later they will feel the tentacles of Divine Providence reaching out after them and drawing them back to the fold. Either in this life or the life to come, they will return. They will have to pay their debt to justice; they will suffer for their sins; they may tread a thorny path…Pray for your careless and disobedient children; hold on to them with your faith, hope on, trust on, till you see the salvation of God. Who are these straying sheep—these wayward sons and daughters? They are children of the Covenant, heirs to the promises.[15]

Is there hope for me or my loved ones? Absolutely yes! Praise the Lord. Let’s take a look at two dispensational heads who were tutored by Jesus and who evolved from the challenges of the natural man to true disciples of Christ. When Jesus meets Peter for the first time he said to him, “Thou art Simon the son of Jonah [the reluctant prophet]: Thou shalt be called Cephas, [Peter], which is by interpretation, A Stone.”[16] Simon’s conversion to becoming Peter the Rock takes place over a period of years. At Caesarea Philippi, Simon Peter answered the question of Jesus, “But whom say ye that I am?” Peter answered, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.”[17] Peter had followed Jesus all over the Holy Land for three years and witnessed multiple miracles and healings. This included the healing of his own mother-in-law,[18] Jairus’s daughter being raised from the dead, [19] and Jesus walking on water.[20] As Peter was about to perish in the Sea of Galilee he cried out, “Lord save me.”[21] It was to Peter that the Lord said, “O thou of little faith.” Peter’s spiritual growth was gradual. The gap between Peter’s knowledge and his faith was the same as for most of us. The fears of the flesh constantly war against the spirit. Peter had to learn to follow the witnesses of the Holy Ghost and to subdue his own will to that of the Lord. “Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended,” declared Peter.[22] Yet three times Peter would deny knowing Jesus before the night was through. The Lord, before he entered the Garden of Gethsemane said to Peter, “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: but I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.”[23] Despite Peter’s claim that he would go both to prison and death with the Lord, his flesh failed him. Before Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane, the Lord said to the sleeping Peter, “What, could ye not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”[24] Peter would eventually become the rock that the Lord wanted him to become. In the Book of Acts Peter manifest all the characteristics of a true disciple of Christ. He boldly spoke in front of the Jewish Sanhedrin, he healed a cripple at the gate Beautiful, and he took the gospel to the gentile Roman Centurion Cornelius, and raised Tabitha from the dead. Peter’s evolution from one whose heart was willing but who often fell short should gives hope to all of us that discipleship is not a single event but a journey. “If a person gains more knowledge and intelligence in this life through his diligence and obedience than another, he will have so much the advantage in the world to come.[25] By tradition it is believed that Peter was crucified in Rome upside down.[26] It was that same Peter who appeared to Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery as a resurrected being and conferred the keys of this dispensation to Joseph Smith.

Joseph Smith would also evolve and be tutored by the Lord to overcome his weaknesses and shortcomings over a lifelong journey. A significant part of the First Vision was the Lord announcing to fourteen year old Joseph that his sins were forgiven.[27] Between the First Vision and the appearance of Moroni when Joseph was seventeen, Joseph admitted that, “I was left to all kinds of temptations; and mingling with all kinds of society, I frequently fell into many foolish errors, and displayed the weakness of youth, and the foibles of human nature; which I am sorry to say, led me into divers temptations, offensive in the sight of God.”[28] These were not “malignant sins” but all sin is offensive to God who “cannot look upon sin with the least degree of allowance; Nevertheless, he that repents and does the commandments of the Lord shall be forgiven[29] Our Heavenly Father looks upon his children with a great degree of allowance and through the Atonement of Jesus Christ we find a loving and merciful Father who will forgive us when we repent and return unto him. Remember the words of the Lord’s apostle, Orson F. Whitney, “Our Heavenly Father is far more merciful, infinitely more charitable than even the best of his servants, and the Everlasting Gospel is mightier in power to save than our narrow finite minds can comprehend.” Forgiving seven times seventy and as oft as the Lord’s people repent is a standard set by a loving and forgiving Father in heaven.[30]

On the very night of September 21, 1823 Joseph sought for forgiveness “for all my sins and follies.”[31] This was followed by the appearance of the Angel Moroni. Four times within a twenty-four hour period the Angel Moroni repeated his message to impress upon young Joseph the significance of his mission and the coming forth of the Book of Mormon. When Joseph was twenty-two and had lost the 116 pages of the Book of Lehi from the Book of Mormon the Lord spoke to Joseph with a strong rebuke, “How oft you have transgressed the commandments and the laws of God, and have gone on in the persuasions of men. For behold, you should not have feared man more than God…you should have been faithful; and he would have extended his arm and supported you against all the fiery darts of the adversary…thou art Joseph, and thou wast chosen to do the work of the Lord, but because of transgression, if thou art not aware thou wilt fall. But remember, God is merciful; therefore, repent of that which thou hast done…and thou art still chosen, and art again called to the work.[32] A year later twenty-three year old Joseph is commanded to repent again, “and walk more uprightly before me, and to yield to the persuasions of men no more.”[33] Later that same year Joseph is reminded to “sin no more; perform with soberness the work which I have commanded you.”[34] Twenty-four year old Joseph was told that after, “he had received a remission of his sins, he was entangled again in the vanities of the world, but after repenting and humbling himself sincerely, through faith, God ministered unto him by an holy angel.”[35] Joseph was twenty-four when the Church was organized on April 6, 1830. The Lord acknowledged that he had heard the prayers of Joseph and that Joseph’s “days of rejoicing are come unto the remission of his sins [again].[36]

Satan was unrelenting on the Prophet Joseph. The Lord admonished Joseph in spite of Satan’s efforts, “Thou art not excusable in thy transgressions, go thy way and sin no more.”[37] Being twenty-four was a difficult year for Joseph and the Lord told him six months after the organizing of the Church, “Behold, verily, verily, I say unto you, that at this time your sins are forgiven you, therefore ye receive these things; but remember to sin no more lest perils shall come upon you.[38] Twenty-five year old Joseph, along with Sidney Rigdon and Oliver Cowdery were commanded to go to Cincinnati and lift up their voices with this admonition, “For I am able to make you holy, and your sins are forgiven you.”[39] Four days later on the banks of the Missouri River the Lord announced, “O ye Elders of my Church, who are assembled upon this spot, whose sins are now forgiven you, for I, the Lord, forgive sins, and am merciful unto those who confess their sins with humble hearts.”[40] The next day after bearing testimony and encountering several Elders who were on their way to Zion in Jackson County, Missouri, the Lord said, “Ye are blessed, for the testimony which ye have borne is recorded in heaven for the angels to look upon; and they rejoice over you, and your sins are forgiven you.”[41] A month later on September 11, 1831, twenty-five year old Joseph and the Elders of the Church were reminded, “I will have compassion upon you. There are those among you who have sinned; but verily I say, for this once, for mine own glory, and the salvation of souls, I have forgiven you your sins. I will be merciful unto you, for I have given you the kingdom. And the keys of the mysteries of the kingdom shall not be taken from my servant Joseph Smith, Jun., through the means I have appointed, while he liveth, inasmuch as he obeyeth mine ordinances. There are those who have sought occasion against him without cause; nevertheless, he has sinned; but verily I say unto you, I, the Lord, forgive sins unto those who confess their sins before me and ask for forgiveness, who have not sinned unto death.”[42] In this same revelation the Lord made it clear that, “I, the Lord will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men.” Twenty-six year old Joseph found himself in Jackson County, Missouri and was given the following revelation, “Verily, verily, I say unto you, my servants, that inasmuch as you have forgiven one another your trespasses, even so I, the Lord, forgive you. Nevertheless, there are those among you who have sinned exceedingly; yea, even all of you have sinned; but verily I say unto you, beware from henceforth, and refrain from sin, lest sore judgments fall upon your headsgo your ways and sin no more; but unto that soul who sinneth shall the former sins return.”[43] Five months later while Joseph was in Kirtland, Ohio and on the fifth anniversary of receiving the gold plates from the angel Moroni, Joseph recorded the following revelation, “For I will forgive you of your sins with this commandment—that ye remain steadfast in your minds in solemnity and in the spirit of prayer, in bearing testimony to all the world.”[44]

Twenty-seven year old Joseph along with Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams were commanded to organize the First Presidency of the Church. In doing so Joseph prayed for a renewal of forgiveness. The Lord responded, “Thus saith the Lord, verily, verily I say unto you my son, thy sins are forgiven thee, according to thy petition, for thy prayers and the prayers of thy brethren have come up into my ears…and again, verily I say unto thy brethren, Sidney Rigdon and Frederick G. Williams, their sins are forgiven them also.”[45] Two months later in May of 1833, all three members of the First Presidency were chastised by the Lord for not teaching their children. Twenty-seven year old Joseph was told, “Verily I say unto Joseph Smith, Jun.-You have not kept the commandments, and must needs stand rebuked before the Lord.”[46] In December of 1832 the Lord commanded them to build a temple in Kirtland. Six months had past and nothing had been done. On June 1, 1833 the Lord reprimanded them in stern language, “Whom I love I also chasten that their sins may be forgiven, for with the chastisement I prepare a way for their deliverance in all things out of temptation, and I have loved you-Wherefore ye must needs be chastened and stand rebuked before my face; for ye have sinned against me a very grievous sin, in that ye have not considered the great commandment in all things, that I have given unto you concerning the building of mine house.”[47] Four days later this revelation was read to Hyrum Smith and Reynolds Cahoon who immediately went out and dug a trench for the temple walls with their own hands. The Kirtland Temple was dedicated on April 3, 1836. Joseph was thirty years old. There were many people who had sacrificed everything to build that temple and there were a multitude of spiritual manifestations poured out upon those in attendance. Many saw angels. A few, along with Joseph, saw Jesus himself standing upon the breastwork of the pulpit and heard him say, “I am your advocate with the Father. Behold, your sins are forgiven you; you are clean before me; therefore, lift up your heads and rejoice.”[48] Some spoke in tongues while others interpreted. Moses committed the keys of gathering Israel, Elias appeared and committed the keys of the gospel of Abraham and Elijah committed the sealing keys for the work of binding families together forever, the living and the dead. Four months later thirty year old Joseph was in Salem, Massachusetts, looking for money to pay the debts of the Church. The Lord told them that in spite of their “follies” there was a treasure of souls to be found as they inquired about the ancient inhabitants and founders of this city. They were told to be wise as serpents and yet without sin.[49]

Over the next seven years Joseph continued to increase in obedience to the Lord. It was a long and difficult journey of repenting multiple times as Joseph bent his will to conform to that of the Lord. Although he was far from perfect Joseph had spiritually matured sufficiently that at the age of thirty-seven and a half or one year before his martyrdom, Joseph received his calling and election made sure by direct revelation from the Lord. “I am the Lord thy God, and will be with thee even unto the end of the world, and through all eternity; for verily I seal upon you your exaltation, and prepare a throne for you in the kingdom of my Father, with Abraham your father. Behold, I have seen your sacrifices, and will forgive all your sins; I have seen your sacrifices in obedience to that which I have told you.”[50]

Consider the following: “Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it.”[51] Is there hope for me and my loved ones to be forgiven of our sins and return to the presence of our Heavenly Father? If the Lord can forgive the Prophet Joseph more than twenty recorded times in the scriptures and whereas much is given much is expected, then there is hope for all of us if we follow the example of a repentant Joseph who sought the Lord many time with his tears and his prayers for forgiveness of sins. It was his humility and willingness to get up and try again to please the Lord that won forgiveness for Joseph.

I find great hope in the lives of the Apostle Peter and Joseph Smith both of whom were the heads of their dispensation of the gospel. “For of him unto whom much is given much is required; and he who sins against the greater light shall receive the greater condemnation.”[52] Since both of these men had great light and knowledge they were under greater condemnation and yet the Lord on multiple occasions forgave them. Is there hope for me? The Prophet Micah pointed out that the Lord does not require perfection from us. “What doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?[53] The Lord rebuked Judas for criticizing Mary, the sister of Martha and Lazarus, for anointing the Savior’s head with the very expensive spikenard which she had prematurely done in preparation for his burial. Judas said, why was this ointment not sold for a man’s wages for three hundred days and given to the poor? Jesus who was a special defender of all women silenced Judas with these words, “Let her alone, for she hath preserved this ointment until now, that she might anoint me in token of my burial.”[54] Luke records that same event and with these words of the Savior, “Her sins which are many are forgiven;   because she loved much.”[55] Mark added, “She hath done what she could.”[56]

It is appropriate for us to acknowledge as Moses did after beholding the glory of the Lord, “Now, for this cause I know that man is nothing, which thing I never had supposed.[57] It is also wise to heed the counsel that Alma gave to his son Shiblon, “Do not say: O God, I thank thee that we are better than our brethren; but rather say: O Lord, forgive my unworthiness, and remember my brethren in mercy—yea, acknowledge your unworthiness before God at all times.”[58] The brother of Jared pleaded with the Lord to be not “angry with thy servant because of his weakness before thee; for we know that thou art holy and dwellest in the heavens, and that we are unworthy before thee; because of the fall our natures have become evil continually; nevertheless, O Lord thou hast given us a commandment that we must call upon thee, that from thee we may receive according to our desires.”[59]

The Lord is eager to forgive seven times seventy. The pathway to becoming a true disciple of Christ is clearly marked. It involves a lifetime of learning and repenting. Can you pray, then you can follow Jesus? Can you be humble, then you can follow Jesus? Can you love others and serve them, then you can follow Jesus. Will you learn from your poor choices and forgive yourself and ask the Lord to forgive you at the same time? We are all inadequate and fall short of always acting right in every situation. It takes time to become a disciple of Jesus Christ. It also requires that we want to be forgiven of our sins. Most of all it is necessary to follow the advice given to King Benjamin by an angel of the Lord. “Believe in God; believe that he is, and that he created all things, both in heaven and in earth; believe that man doth not comprehend all things which the Lord can comprehend. And again, believe that ye must repent of your sins and forsake them, and humble yourself before God; and ask in sincerity of heart that he would forgive you; and now if you believe all these things see that ye do them…Remember and always retain in remembrance, the greatness of God, and your own nothingness, and his goodness and long suffering towards you, unworthy creatures, and humble yourselves even in the depths of humility, calling on the name of the Lord daily, and standing steadfastly in the faith of that which is to come…if ye do this ye shall rejoice, and be filled with the love of God and always retain a remission of your sins.”[60]

A final thought. Did you know that you are loved by your Heavenly Father and by Jesus Christ? I mean do you truly believe that you are loved with all of your shortcomings and sins as if you were the only child of our Heavenly Father? Jesus prayed for Peter by name. Just as Jesus picked up the little children and blest them one by one near the temple in Bountiful so did he pray for you when he took upon himself your sins in the temple of Gethsemane? There are no group ordinances performed. Each and every name of a soul that is of great worth to our Heavenly Father and Jesus was dealt with one by one in the Atonement of Jesus Christ. Remember what Alma said, “Time only is measured unto men.”[61] In my mind’s eye I can see the Lord taking your name through the Temple of Gethsemane much like we perform the work for the dead in the temple one by one. Imagine that you heard the Lord pray for you by name when he took upon himself your sins in the Garden of Gethsemane. “Father, I pray that thou wilt forgive [your name] for all the sins which [your name] has committed and for which I am willing to suffer the consequences of [your name] poor choices which would have kept [your name] from returning unto thee. I pray Father that [your name] will accept this work I have performed in their behalf and know of our deep and abiding love for [your name].”

There is no question in my mind but that Jesus has prayed for you individually by name and considered all of the challenges you have and will yet face in mortality and in the Spirit World. You are a child of God and he has prayed for you!
